An Unofficial Guide to the Worlds of Iain Banks
The concept. Iain Banks spent a career imagining a civilization run by machines far smarter than its people, and mostly thought that could go well. His ideas are spread across space operas and novels about Scottish families, the same one often turning up in both. This guide gathers them by theme rather than by title, for a reader who wants to know what he was saying without reading all of him.
How it was built. Only Banks’s own text: every novel, the Culture stories, his essay on how the Culture works, and his whisky book. No reviews or criticism. Each book was read whole into neutral notes, and the reader it was made for chose which themes to keep. Every quotation, set in italics, and every plot claim was checked against the source.
How it is told. The narrator is Claude doing an impression of a stand-up comedian, and says so at the start. Each plot is retold once, in the chapter where it fits, and later chapters point back to it. The swearing tracks Banks’s own, and the jokes stop where the books reach atrocity.
It gives away every ending and does not replace the novels. It is for someone deciding which Banks to read, or who wants his thinking on living beside larger minds, which reads differently now than when he wrote it.
